Next summer, apart from signing a new centre-back, Real Madrid are seriously considering the possibility of roping in a new central midfielder.
Since Toni Kroos’ retirement and the departure of Luka Modric, Real Madrid have missed the presence of a player in midfield who can control proceedings and dictate the tempo from the centre of the park.
As such, the idea is to sign a new midfielder who can offer those qualities, which are lacking in the current squad despite the presence of some star names.
To that end, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace has emerged as a target for Real Madrid, but they face serious competition for the England midfielder.
Indeed, as per reports relayed by AS, Manchester United have made Adam Wharton their top target and are prepared to go big for his signing in 2026.
The Red Devils are ready to splash around €100 million to secure the Englishman’s signing.

Just 21 years old, Wharton has established himself as one of the most promising midfielders in the Premier League and has become a regular in the England national team squad.
Crystal Palace are reluctant to lose one of their key players, whose contract runs until 2029, but an offer of €100 million might be too good to turn down for the Eagles.
With Manchester United willing to spare no efforts in their pursuit of Wharton, it will be interesting to see how Real Madrid react.
Wharton, as it happens, is one the Merengues’ favourite targets to strengthen the midfield department in 2026.
At the same time, they have other candidates on the agenda, including AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit, whom they have scouted regularly, but face competition from other European giants.
