Manchester United face Aston Villa in the Premier League this afternoon in a massive clash for both teams.
The two teams are level on points in the Premier League table, in what is a fiercely competitive battle for Champions League qualification.
It’s arguably the biggest meeting between the sides for several seasons and, ahead of the game, we’ve looked at five of the most memorable past meetings in the Premier League era.
Manchester United’s season looked to be getting away from them after defeat at Aston Villa in November 1992. The Red Devils had made a poor start to the Premier League’s inaugural campaign, and Dalian Atkinson’s goal extended a winless run to seven league games.
Mired in mid-table, the arrival of Eric Cantona from Leeds United later that month kick-started an incredible upturn. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side claimed the championship, ending a 26-year title drought, with autumn conquerors Aston Villa as runners-up.
Alan Hansen infamously remarked on Match of the Day that “You can’t win anything with kids,” after an inexperienced Manchester United side were thumped at Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the 1994/95 season.
The champions had allowed Paul Ince, Mark Hughes, and Andrei Kanchelskis to leave in the summer, with Sir Alex Ferguson placing his trust in several academy products. United were well beaten in their season-opener at Villa Park, as goals from Ian Taylor, Mark Draper, and future Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke sealed success for the hosts.
Hansen’s comments came back to haunt him, however, as Manchester United ended the campaign as domestic double winners. Villa sealed success of their own by lifting the League Cup.
A brave roll of the dice paid off for Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008/09, in one of the great Premier League title race moments.
United trailed 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in a potentially damaging blow to their title dream, after goals from Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener.
Ronaldo restored parity with nine minutes to go, before an unexpected hero completed the comeback. Off the bench for his debut, 17-year-old Federico Macheda spun sharply before curling an unstoppable finish past Brad Friedel in stoppage time.
The two teams met at Wembley to contest the 2010 League Cup final with Aston Villa scarred by a sense of injustice.
James Milner fired Aston Villa ahead from the penalty spot inside five minutes, but Villa were furious after referee Phil Dowd opted against sending Nemanja Vidic off for his foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Villa’s anger increased when Michael Owen equalised just seven minutes later, sliding a finish past former Liverpool teammate Brad Friedel. Wayne Rooney came off the bench to head home the winner.

Another stirring comeback for Manchester United at Aston Villa in November had kept the club on course for the title in 2012/13.
The Premier League leaders found themselves 2-0 behind early in the second half, after Aston Villa’s Andreas Weimann had struck twice, either side of the interval.
Fortunately, Javier Hernandez was on hand with a ‘super sub’ salvation. On at half-time, the Mexican scored twice, either side of a Ron Vlaar own goal, to earn the visitors the points.
Fast forward to the spring and the teams met with the title on the line. A victory for Manchester United would coronate them as champions – and how they delivered.
Robin van Persie scored a stunning hat-trick, including a Goal of the Season contender on the volley, to secure the club’s record-extending 20th top-flight crown, in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season.
