Marco Silva began Benfica’s pre-season at Seixal after replacing José Mourinho, and the opening session was notable for several omissions. According to Glorioso 1904, around 30 players reported for duty.
Six internationals were unavailable due to World Cup commitments, namely Tomás Araújo, Fredrik Aursnes, Andreas Schjelderup, Richard Ríos, Dodi Lukebakio and Amar Dedic.
More striking were those omitted by internal club decision. Rafa Obrador, Diogo Prioste, João Veloso, Nuno Félix, Gustavo Varela and Henrique Araújo were not involved on day one, signalling a recalibration of the squad.
These moves fit the SAD’s plan to reshape the senior group, with several youngsters being assessed for loans or permanent exits. Cases such as Diogo Prioste and João Veloso point towards possible loans within the Primeira Liga, aimed at greater competitiveness and development.
Rafa Obrador remains among the most discussed names regarding departures. The Spanish left-back spent the second half of last season at Torino on loan, and the Italian club are following him while attempting to renegotiate the transfer figures. Gustavo Varela and other youngsters also feature among potential exits as part of an asset monetisation approach.
