Marcos Leonardo will remain at Al Hilal after his proposed move to Atlético Madrid collapsed late in the window.

Correio da Manhã reports that Atlético did not proceed because of turbulence in the Saudi league, with the Public Investment Fund, PIF, facing heavy criticism. The report added the transfer fee was not the sticking point.

It had appeared the clubs had an agreement, with the Brazilian due to join on loan until the end of the season and an option to buy around €40 million.

With that deal shelved, Atlético moved quickly and announced the arrival of Ademola Lookman from Atalanta yesterday afternoon. The Nigerian forward joins from the Serie A club.

This season Marcos Leonardo, valued at €20 million, has made 24 appearances for Al Hilal, 15 in the Saudi league, six in the Asian Champions League and three in the Saudi King’s Cup. Across 1,628 minutes he has scored 14 goals and supplied one assist.
