Manchester City secured a 3-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United in the fifth round of the FA Cup at St James’ Park on Saturday, thanks to Omar Marmoush’s brace.
The hosts had the first chance inside the opening 10 minutes as James Trafford parried a clearance into Nick Woltemade’s path. His header was cleared off the line by Nico Gonzalez.
The Magpies’ early pressure was rewarded in the 18th minute when Sandro Tonali played Harvey Barnes through on goal. He finished into the top corner.
Aaron Ramsdale was quick to smother Savinho’s effort as City searched for the equaliser.
However, the Brazilian eventually got on the scoresheet after Jeremy Doku’s cross struck his shin and nestled into the net.
City could’ve taken the lead through Tijjani Reijnders after he was played through on goal by Savinho, but he drilled his effort wide.
Marmoush fired City ahead after the break. Matheus Nunes fired in a cross to the back post, and the Egyptian finished from close range.
Ramsdale parried away another Marmoush effort, and Reijnders volleyed over the rebound as City searched for a third.
Marmoush increased the lead in the 65 th minute, hitting the top corner with a powerful strike.
City held on to see out the result. They will be in the quarter-final draw on Monday alongside Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.
