Leicester City are exploring a route back into club football for former West Ham striker Michail Antonio, who is training with the club. Marti Cifuentes says the Jamaica international looks in good condition and has put last year’s car crash behind him.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, Antonio could earn a contract as City assess their striker options, but he will not be in the squad to face Ipswich on Saturday while discussions continue.

The 35-year-old has not played senior club football for more than a year after breaking his leg in a serious road accident last December, and he was released by the Hammers in the summer.

Cifuentes views him as a highly experienced Premier League forward and a positive presence around the group. He said Antonio has trained only a couple of days, looks good, and is showing no lingering effects, though match fitness will take time because games are a different level to training.

City are still weighing up whether to offer terms, with Antonio content to keep training while they make a decision.

Leicester’s three strikers, Jordan Ayew, Patson Daka and Julian Carranza, have scored just four goals between them this season, including two penalties, and extra firepower could help their push up the table.

The Ipswich match will be Daka’s final appearance before he joins Zambia for the Africa Cup of Nations. If Zambia go all the way, he will miss eight City fixtures.
