Martin Zubimendi: Liverpool plotting to pip Manchester United to Real Sociedad star’s signature | OneFootball

Liverpool have reportedly joined the race for Manchester United midfield target Martin Zubimendi and are working on getting a deal for him over the line.

Zubimendi has been repeatedly mentioned as a player United are interested in as part of the club’s efforts to bolster their midfield department.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were weighing up a swoop for Zubimendi after abandoning their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte.

The Real Sociedad man was part of Spain’s title-winning squad at Euro 2024, where he primarily played the role of Rodri’s understudy. He replaced the Manchester City star at half-time against England in the final and produced a sensational performance in the middle of the park.

According to the reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic, United are set to face stiff competition in their bid to land Zubimendi, with Liverpool now “exploring a deal” to sign the Spaniard.

Ornstein wrote for the newspaper, “A move for the 25-year-old Spain international is complicated by his €60million (£51.7m; $63.4m) release clause needing to be paid in full — if the La Liga club are not willing to negotiate a fee below that figure.”

“Liverpool would also need to convince Zubimendi to leave, which a number of suitors from the Premier League and elsewhere have not managed to do so far. Zubimendi has previously attracted the interest of Arsenal and Barcelona, with the latter keen on the Spaniard as far back as last summer.”

Earlier on Wednesday, it was claimed that Zubimendi had no interest in parting ways with Sociedad and had made it clear that his wish was to remain at San Sebastian.

However, it now seems like the 25-year-old has had a change of heart and if an update provided by Noticias de Gipuzkoa is anything to go by, he is seriously considering the option of playing for Liverpool.

Noticias de Gipuzkoa reveal that the United target is “thinking” about a switch to Anfield, with the Merseyside outfit “serious” about securing his services.

The news outlet notes, ” Liverpool are seriously coming for Martín Zubimendi and everything seems to indicate that, unless the player changes his mind, their offensive could be successful.”

“Zubimendi has always been a passionate follower of the Premier League and has made no secret of the fact that he would like to try his luck there one day.”

It’s understood that within Sociedad, there is an “atmosphere of resignation” that Zubimendi will eventually leave for a fresh challenge.

If United are indeed keen on luring Zubimendi to Old Trafford, then they will need to move with speed lest Liverpool beat them to him.
