Matt Doherty targets Premier League return after sealing Sheffield United move | OneFootball

Matt Doherty has joined Sheffield United on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, and is targeting a Premier League return.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 34-year-old full-back and 53-cap Republic of Ireland international departs Wolves after 13 years across two spells and 389 appearances, and will face them in the Championship this season. He also had stints with Tottenham and Atletico Madrid between his Wolves years.

He said: "I'm backing the manager to get the club back into the Premier League and I'm guessing that is the goal for everyone at the end of the day."

Signed from Bohemians in Dublin for £75,000 in 2010, he won League One and Championship titles, played in Europe, and Wolves labelled him a "club legend" on exit.

Blades manager Chris Wilder said: "There's no doubting we are getting a player here who knows what it takes to be successful. He'll drive those standards we are looking for and bring the best out of others in the squad."

Sheffield United finished 13th in the Championship last season.
