Matt Doherty targets Premier League return after Sheffield United move | OneFootball

Matt Doherty has set his sights on a Premier League return after signing a one-year deal with Sheffield United, which includes an option for a further 12 months.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 34-year-old left Wolves on a free this summer after 13 years across two spells and will face his former club in the Championship under Chris Wilder.

He said a tour of Bramall Lane and talks with Wilder convinced him, adding that he backs the manager to push for promotion and views a top-flight return as a shared goal. He believes in Wilder’s plan and expects that belief to run both ways.

Wilder said Doherty brings know-how and leadership, noting the full-back’s pedigree with Wolves, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, and his desire to keep achieving. He sees him as a culture carrier who can lift standards in the squad.

Doherty made 389 Wolves appearances across spells from 2010 to 2020 and 2023 to 2026, and has 53 Republic of Ireland caps. Wolves initially signed him from Bohemians in 2010 for £75,000.

He won League One and Championship titles with Wolves and featured in European competition, and the club hailed him as a club legend on his departure.

United finished 13th in the Championship last season.
