Matthias Jaissle named Newcastle head coach after Eddie Howe exit | OneFootball

Newcastle have appointed Matthias Jaissle as head coach, confirmed on Wednesday evening, five days after Eddie Howe resigned. The 38-year-old arrives from Al-Ahli, where he has been in charge since 2023.

The club said in a statement that a thorough, rigorous and confidential recruitment process identified Jaissle as the ideal candidate, adding that his player development, energetic team-building and leadership align with Newcastle’s direction and ambitions.

Contract length has not been disclosed and his backroom team will be confirmed in the coming days. He has linked up with the squad at their pre-season camp in La Manga, Spain.

A former defender with Hoffenheim, where he made 65 appearances, Jaissle retired in 2014 at the age of 26. He coached as assistant at Brondby from 2017 to 2019, then led RB Salzburg’s under-18s from 2019 to 2021 before working in the academy.

Promoted to Salzburg’s first team, he won the Austrian title in 2022 and 2023 and the Austrian Cup in 2022. He moved to Al-Ahli in 2023, lifting the AFC Champions League in 2025 and 2026.

Newcastle and Al-Ahli are majority owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The Magpies open their Premier League campaign on 23 August at 17:30 at home to Liverpool.
