Newcastle United appoint Matthias Jaissle as new head coach | OneFootball

Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach, with the German signing a four-year contract following Eddie Howe's departure.

The 38-year-old has already linked up with the squad at their pre-season training camp in La Manga after the final paperwork was completed, with Newcastle reportedly paying more than £9 million in compensation to Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli to secure his release.

Jaissle arrives on Tyneside with an impressive CV despite his relatively young age. After guiding Red Bull Salzburg to consecutive Austrian league titles and an Austrian Cup, he moved to Al Ahli in 2023, where he delivered back-to-back AFC Champions League triumphs and established himself as one of Europe's most promising young coaches.

He now faces a major rebuilding job at St James' Park following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that ended with Newcastle finishing 12th in the Premier League. The club have also seen several key players leave this summer, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali already departing, while captain Bruno Guimarães continues to be linked with a move away.

Jaissle succeeds Eddie Howe, who transformed Newcastle during his five-year spell, leading the Magpies to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years with the 2025 Carabao Cup and securing two Champions League qualifications.

The German's first game in charge is expected to be Friday's pre-season friendly against Valencia before Newcastle begin their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool later this month.
