Dutch duo Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee were reportedly absent from Manchester United training on Wednesday morning.

De Ligt and Zirkzee injured

Fresh from a dominant 2-0 victory over Manchester City, United now face another stern test, a trip to the Emirates to face league leaders Arsenal.

A victory over the Gunners would be another statement win for Michael Carrick, who is aiming to guide the club to a top-four finish after an uncertain start to the season with Ruben Amorim.

Carrick was not able to call on De Ligt and Zirkzee for the City game, with the pair both sidelined with injuries. De Ligt had been one of the club’s most consistent players in the early stages of the campaign, but his momentum was halted by a physical setback.

De Ligt has not featured for United since the end of November due to a back issue, which appears to be more troublesome than initially thought.

Speaking to reporters, Carrick expressed optimism that De Ligt will be back very soon.

Meanwhile, Zirkzee missed the City game due to a knock picked up in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. His problem is not believed to be a serious one.

De Ligt and Zirkzee absent from training

According to Sky Sports, De Ligt and Zirkzee were not present at Carrington on Wednesday morning as United undertook training.

“The Sky Sports News cameras captured Man Utd head coach Michael Carrick taking a hands-on approach during the session, alongside coaches Jonathan Woodgate, Steve Holland, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion.”

The late kick-off and remaining time before the Arsenal fixture offer a slight hope that Carrick could have one or both players available.

Meanwhile, Steve Railston of the Manchester Evening News notes that Shea Lacey was part of first-team training.

Lacey was not part of the matchday squad that took on City due to suspension.
