Matveï Safonov’s broken left hand has temporarily settled PSG’s number one question, giving Lucas Chevalier a clear run. Saturday’s Coupe de France tie against Fontenay-le-Comte of N3, 21:00 in Nantes, could also suit 19-year-old former Roma goalkeeper Renato Marin for a first start this season. Luis Enrique has kept his choice private until informing the players.

According to L'Équipe, the Russia international fractured his left hand in Doha during Wednesday’s Intercontinental Cup final against Flamengo, and is expected to miss three to four weeks. Staff believe it happened on the third penalty of the shootout, and the coach viewed the situation as incredible, pointing to adrenaline and even karma.

If the injury came on Pedro’s attempt, Safonov showed nothing, then denied Léo Pereira and Luiz Araujo and joined the post-match celebrations.

Chevalier now has a chance to quieten the debate after Safonov’s strong stint had intensified competition following the former Lille goalkeeper’s right ankle knock at Monaco, 0-1 on 29 November. The coach praised Safonov but stressed rest and recovery, and expressed confidence in a quick return.

Chevalier’s level since his summer arrival had also been questioned, amid the strain of succeeding Gianluigi Donnarumma, criticism and the so-called likegate episode. He was disappointed not to start against Flamengo, yet privately resolved to reclaim his place, with no guarantees.

The Coupe de France is often used to rotate, and Chevalier was already preparing to face Fontenay-le-Comte before learning of Safonov’s setback. The decision still rests with Luis Enrique.

Last season, at this stage, the coach used Safonov, then Donnarumma’s deputy, against Lens, 1-1 and 4-3 on penalties, with Arnau Tenas playing the next round at Espaly, 4-2, another N3 side.
