Mauricio learned in the Allianz Parque dressing room that he had received his first Paraguay call-up after Palmeiras’ 1-0 win over Mirassol on Sunday, and he now hopes to play at the World Cup from June.
According to Globo.com, the announcement followed the final whistle and confirmed friendlies against Greece and Morocco on 27 and 31 March. Club-mates Gustavo Gómez and Sosa were also selected.
He described it as a childhood dream that has felt closer as his career has developed, saying his expectations are high.
He stressed the finals are still distant, that he must do his job and add with humility, and that his focus remains showing his best for Palmeiras. If picked, he wants to help in any way and keep his feet on the ground.
Mauricio addressed the squad to thank them for helping create this opportunity, with team-mates celebrating, joking and asking for a few words in Spanish. He called it a proud, unique moment for him and his family.
The midfielder previously featured for Brazil at youth level, but with a Paraguayan-born father and relatives still in the country he completed naturalisation last month.
Paraguay have reached the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
