UEFA has appointed Italian referee Maurizio Mariani for Liverpool v PSG in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on Tuesday at 21:00. According to L'Équipe, he has taken charge of PSG twice, including November's 1-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.
He sits eighth in the 2025 world referees ranking, led by Clément Turpin with François Letexier second. Weeks earlier he had been assigned to a lower-table Serie B match between Virtus Entella and Empoli.
That PSG v Bayern tie was notable for a dangerous tackle from behind on Achraf Hakimi by Luis Diaz, first punished with a yellow card, then upgraded after VAR to a red for the Bayern player.
During Monaco v Benfica in February 2025, Mariani was at the centre of debate after sending off Moatasem Al-Musrati for very slight dissent in the play-off first leg, which finished 0-1.
More recently, on 25 October, he was strongly criticised, including by his superiors, after awarding Napoli a penalty against Inter Milan in a 3-1 match.
Last season the 44-year-old Roman, who will be one of four Italian referees at the World Cup from 11 June to 19 July, also oversaw PSG's quarter-final first leg against Aston Villa, a 3-1 win. He has officiated Liverpool only once, a 3-2 victory over Atletico de Madrid at Anfield in the league phase last September.
