Max Wober is close to sealing a return to Germany with Schalke after a mutual termination of his Leeds United contract.
According to Sky Sports Germany, the 28-year-old arrived on Wednesday morning for a medical ahead of an announcement. Bild claims the deal at Schalke is performance based.
He was omitted from Daniel Farke’s squad for Leeds’ pre-season tour of the United States on Tuesday, 21 July.
Leeds signed him from Red Bull Salzburg for £11 million in January 2023, yet will receive no transfer fee. His Elland Road contract was due to expire next year.
Ending the deal removes a sizeable salary without a drawn-out negotiation. It also opens room for reinforcements, with Wober well down the defensive pecking order.
Injury-hit loans at Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2023-24 and Werder Bremen in 2025-26, limited to just three appearances, have informed Schalke’s cautious stance. That structure protects the club and offers Wober a platform to re-establish himself.
