Out-on-loan Leeds United defender Max Wober has withdrawn from Austria duty amid ongoing injury problems during his Werder Bremen loan.

Salzburger Nachrichten reported on Sunday that Wober left the national team’s Vienna base before Tuesday’s friendly against South Korea. He was not due to feature, but has been struggling with muscle problems and subsequently departed the group.

Wober joined Werder Bremen on loan for the 2025/26 campaign in the summer, then featured only in an August DFB-Pokal defeat on debut. A hamstring issue sidelined him for four months, and a run-out in a friendly against St. Pauli earlier this year brought a setback.

Calf pain was later diagnosed as a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement, and he was due to see a specialist in London before the international break. His call-up for March had hinted at progress, but the problem has persisted.

“I’m not far from being fit, but I still can’t get back to running and playing football completely pain-free. I hope this appointment will help me and that I can be back on the pitch in two weeks. Hopefully, after the international break, I’ll at least have five or six games where I can give my all for the club,” he told the 1x1Sport Fußballtrainer podcast.

Werder have an option to make the loan permanent, which looks unlikely given he has only played once. As things stand, Wober is due to report back to Leeds in the summer with 12 months left on his Elland Road contract.
