Lionel Messi has arrived in the country to join Argentina’s training ahead of friendlies against Mauritania and Zambia, sharing a warm moment with Claudio Fabián Tapia that quickly drew attention on social media.

The AFA president posted a series of photos on his official account alongside the captain, the pair embracing. He said in a post that he was welcoming the captain, calling him the best in the world and joking about bringing the best mates, before closing with a unifying message.

Amid internal tension at AFA, with many spectators unhappy about the current Liga Profesional format and other domestic divisions, and following recent controversies around the Association, Tapia’s post was not well received.

Argentina face Mauritania on Friday at 20:15 at La Bombonera.

They then meet Zambia on Tuesday 31 March at the same time and venue, as part of their final matches before the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
