Croatia collected their first World Cup points by beating Panama 1-0. England and Ghana finished goalless, while Colombia reached the last 16 by edging DR Congo 1-0.
L'Équipe notes it was a quieter night than the previous one, which produced 11 goals. Beyond Portugal's 5-0 over Uzbekistan, the fixtures ended in England's stalemate and narrow wins for Croatia and Colombia.
Luka Modric marked his 200th cap, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo on 230 and Lionel Messi on 201. Team-mates carried the Croatia captain in shirts reading 'Infinite legacy'. He might have added a superb assist to Marco Pasalic, but the chance was spurned.
Carlos Queiroz believed key decisions, and the VAR, denied Ghana against England. He said Jordan Pickford should have been sent off for colliding with Prince Adu outside the box on 67 minutes, and that Ezri Konsa's contact with Adu at 79 warranted a penalty.
Lionel Mpasi excelled despite DR Congo's loss to Colombia, making five saves in the first 20 minutes, the first such tally at a World Cup since Jamaica's Warren Barrett against Argentina in 1998. The Le Havre goalkeeper, 31, finished with eight stops before finally being beaten.
France under Didier Deschamps are already through after beating Senegal 3-1 and Iraq 3-0. Elsewhere French coaches are winless, with Rudi Garcia's Belgium drawing Egypt 1-1 and Iran 0-0, Sabri Lamouchi sacked by Tunisia after 1-5 to Sweden and successor Hervé Renard losing 0-4 to Japan, while Sébastien Migné's Haiti fell 0-1 to Scotland and 0-3 to Brazil.
