Reds star sustained a knock after scoring in midweek Champions League win over Galatasaray
Mohamed Salah will miss Liverpool’s trip to Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday due to injury, manager Arne Slot has revealed.
Salah asked to be substituted having picked up a knock late on during Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League last 16 at Anfield that overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit and set up a quarter-final reunion with holders Paris Saint-Germain next month.
It was an eventful night for the Egypt forward, who saw a penalty saved but later registered a brilliant goal and an assist as he became the first African player ever to score 50 in Europe’s elite club competition.
However, Slot confirmed after the game that Salah requested to come off because of an injury and would need to be assessed ahead of the visit to Brighton.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Liverpool boss announced that he would not be involved in the lunchtime kick-off at the Amex Stadium or in Egypt’s upcoming friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Spain.
“It is unusual [that Salah is injured], as a result of that I think you expect the outcome, so not available for tomorrow,” Slot said on Salah.
Asked for more details on Salah’s unspecified injury or a potential timeframe for his return, he added: “The good thing for Liverpool is that we go to an international break. The bad thing for Egypt is that he can't go there.
“We are hoping with what Mo has shown in the past that he can recover faster than other players might in similar situations.
“He takes such good care of his body and history has shown he can be back earlier than others. Bu it’s only two weeks until we go again, so let’s hope in that period of time he can be back.”
Defender Joe Gomez could be involved in some capacity against Brighton after injury issues that saw him go from starting three games in a row to being an unused substitute in midweek, but will not feature from the off.
“Joe was on the bench [against Galatasaray], but he wasn’t able to come on,” Slot said. “We tried to postpone it as far as we could, he already told me before the start of the game that he didn’t feel good.
“I said ‘okay, let’s wait, at half-time maybe a miracle can happen and we might need you in extra time’. He might be available for tomorrow but definitely not to start.”
Liverpool’s record signing Alexander Isak continues to build up his match fitness in training after three months out with a broken leg, but is not in contention to face Brighton.
Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni all remain long-term absentees, meanwhile.
