Egypt national team captain Mohamed Salah set a new African World Cup qualifiers record as the Pharaohs beat Djibouti 3-0 on Wednesday.

The Liverpool winger scored a brace after former Pyramids star Ibrahim Adel had opened the scoring in the eighth minute.

As a result, Egypt qualified for the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico. It will be their fourth appearance at the global showpiece.

Meanwhile, Salah surpassed Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o, Islam Slimani and Moumouni Dagano as the all-time leading goal scorer in African World Cup qualification.

The 33-year-old forward took his tally to 20 goals, while the aforementioned players are tied on 18 goals.

What's more, Salah is six goals away from equaling the record of Egypt's all-time top goal scorer, having netted 63 goals in 108 caps.

Interestingly, the top scorer record is held by his current head coach Hossam Hassan, who helped Salah become the only captain to guide Egypt to two World Cup appearances with the recent feat.
