Mohamed Salah will start for Egypt against Australia in their World Cup round of 32 tie at 20:00 on Friday, ending uncertainty after his injury in the final group game.

Hossam Hassan had said on Thursday he planned to use him. According to L'Équipe, Salah is in the XI as Egypt stick with their 4-2-3-1, which saw them finish second in their group.

Salah operates as the No 10 with Emam Ashour and Ziko supporting Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush. Yasser Ibrahim comes in for Nice defender Mohamed Abdelmonem, who was injured last time out. Egypt XI includes Shobeir in goal, Hany, Rabia, Ibrahim and Hafez in defence, Fathi and Attia-Ashour in midfield, Salah the captain with Ziko behind Marmoush.

Australia stick with a 3-4-3, head coach Tony Popovic selecting the same side that faced Paraguay. Captain Harry Souttar starts in central defence with Lucas Herrington and Alessandro Circati, and Jackson Irvine is in midfield. Australia XI features Beach in goal, Circati, Souttar and Herrington in defence, Bos, O'Neil, Irvine and Behich across midfield, Volpato, Irankunda and Metcalfe in attack.

Up front, Nestory Irankunda leads after his superb strike against Türkiye in the opener, alongside Cristian Volpato and Connor Metcalfe. This is the first World Cup knockout match in which neither a European team nor an American team are involved.
