An electric Stadium of Light staged Sunderland’s final-day European decider against Chelsea, ending with the Black Cats celebrating a first continental campaign since 1973.
According to Sunderland Echo, they began 10th on 51 points, one behind Chelsea and Brentford and two off seventh-placed Brighton, so a win plus help elsewhere could still deliver Europe.
The noise and display evoked the Sheffield Wednesday play-off semi-final, cat eyes pulsing as belief met jeopardy.
Trai Hume, selected on the right after debate, justified it. Robin Roefs denied Cole Palmer early, handball shouts came and went, then Hume struck from Luke O’Nien’s pass.
Results elsewhere briefly lifted Sunderland to seventh at half-time, Brentford drawing Liverpool and Brighton trailing 2-1 to Manchester United.
Soon after the restart Brian Brobbey was denied by Robert Sanchez, a big chance to make it 2-0.
At 2-1 up around the hour, Noah Sadiki raged when Roefs delayed a release wide left. Régis Le Bris then introduced Wilson Isidor for Brobbey and Habib Diarra for Nilson Angulo.
Wesley Fofana’s second yellow strengthened Sunderland’s grip, though Diarra slipped and blazed over when 3-1 beckoned.
10 minutes were added as Manchester United led Brighton 3-0 and Liverpool drew 1-1 with Brentford, home fans hauling the team through every clearance.
Gary Rowell’s name rolled around four minutes from time, Chris Rigg replaced Enzo Le Fée, and the full-time release brought bedlam.
Luke O’Nien celebrated with Lynden Gooch and Dan Neil, Dan Ballard, on crutches, joined as Granit Xhaka and Régis Le Bris addressed supporters.
