José Mourinho has told Rui Costa he will remain in charge of Benfica despite rumours linking him with Real Madrid.

According to O Jogo, their relationship has not been shaken by recent results and the pair are aligned on the remainder of this season and on building the 2026/27 squad.

Contractually, both the coach and Benfica can trigger a unilateral termination clause, cutting any compensation to half of the total cost, roughly three million euros if used. Rui Costa has also said publicly that replacing him is not under consideration.

The president has praised Mourinho’s character and experience, even as league and Champions League standings are below expectations. He has also accepted that the current moment is not a positive one.

On Friday, 23 January, Rui Costa said they had lost two competitions in a short period, that the Champions League situation is difficult and the league is not where they wanted it. He added they must face the season with determination, focus on work rather than miracles, and fight to the last second in every competition.
