Charlton Athletic star James Bree has joked that his manager Nathan Jones would have been raging if he had snubbed the Addicks.

Bree joined Charlton on loan from Championship rivals Southampton on deadline day, having made 17 appearances in the Premier League last season for the Saints.

Jones has signed Bree for the third time, having also brought him to Luton Town and Southampton previously.

Bree suggested that Jones might have been waiting for him to become available, which only happened near to the closure of the window.

The right-back quipped that Jones would have had a fit of rage if he had chosen to go to another club, turning down Charlton.

Bree said via the club’s official website: “I think he was waiting for me to become available and I did with a couple of days left.

“Once we started speaking I was always confident that we were going to get it through and thankfully we did.

“To be fair to the gaffer I think he’d have been raging at me if I went anywhere else!”

Bree appreciates the relationship he has with Jones, noting that the manager has always managed to bring the best out of him.

“He’s been a massive influence on my career so far and I think I’ve played my best football underneath him.

“I enjoy working with him, I know how he works and what he likes to do and I think that suits me really well.

“Once I had the chance to work with him again it was something that I wanted to do.”

Bree made his Charlton debut against Millwall after coming on for Rob Apter and managing around 30 minutes.

Last weekend saw his full-debut, with Bree winning the fans’ Man of the Match after his assist for Tanto Olaofe’s winner in the 90th minute against Sheffield United.

Olaofe, together with Tyreece Campbell, Miles Leaburn and Charlie Kelman, was namechecked by a former Championship striker as someone who can go on to play in the Premier League.

Bree will have a chance to build on his performances on Saturday as the Addicks welcome a Blackburn Rovers side who will now have to replay their fixture with Ipswich Town, despite leading in the 80th minute and having a numerical advantage.
