New York has temporarily renamed several streets for the World Cup, with Thierry Henry among those honoured.

The player said in a post that, as a Frenchman who calls London home, New York remains his favourite city. He added that having a street bearing his name is an honour he never dared dream of, and that the city holds a special place in his heart.

Henry, a former New York Red Bulls forward from 2010 to 2014, has his name at the junction of 50th Street and Sixth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan.

The intersection of Shea Road and Meridian Road has also been renamed in honour of Pelé.

The Big Apple is dressing itself in tournament colours as kick-off nears. The choice may also be explained by Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York, being a keen Arsenal supporter, with Henry one of the club’s legends.

Set to work as a pundit on English television during the World Cup, Henry could not attend the unveiling because of media commitments. He has arranged a thank-you selfie with Virginia Maloney, the elected official behind the initiative, and Mamdani. The temporary street names will remain in place until one November.
