Newcastle United will be without winger Anthony Elanga when Leeds United visit St James’ Park on Wednesday, Eddie Howe has confirmed.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Leeds arrive aiming to extend a league run to eight unbeaten, while Newcastle are 11 home games without defeat and have won their last two, both without Elanga.

The £55million summer signing has one assist and no goals in 17 Premier League outings, has missed three matches with a knock and is expected to miss a fourth. Howe said he is not ready yet and should not be out for long, but this fixture will come too soon.

Jacob Murphy felt hamstring discomfort during Sunday’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace and was replaced by Joe Willock. A scan has shown no major injury, with Howe suggesting fatigue, and he thinks Murphy will be available, though it will be a late decision.

If Murphy is passed fit, the hosts are set to be without four players, Elanga, Dan Burn, Will Osula and Emil Krafth, due to rib, ankle and knee issues. Kieran Tripper, Sven Botman and Tino Livramento returned to the squad against Palace.

Leeds are without Dan James for the foreseeable future with a hamstring tendon problem. Daniel Farke said one of Jayden Bogle or Joe Rodon could make the squad, and captain Ethan Ampadu is back from suspension and likely to start after missing the 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
