Newcastle United were interested in midfielder Davide Frattesi this summer, and the Geordies continue to be linked with the Italian.

The Newcastle target is available in January, according to Tuttomercatoweb, after falling down the pecking order at Inter Milan.

He received zero minutes in the derby over the weekend and hasn’t started a league game since October 4. The writing on the wall is clear.

This presents an opportunity for Newcastle to swoop for his services in the January transfer window.

The Magpies could use midfield reinforcement as they look to climb into the top half of the table after a wobbly start to the season.

Frattesi needs a new landing spot where he can get game time, hoping to earn a place on Italy’s potential World Cup squad, and St James’ Park could be the perfect ground.

The Italian international (33 caps) is a probing force in the final third and would give Newcastle goals from midfield.

However, Frattesi is a good player, but he’s not a transformational one.

There’s a reason he can’t get minutes at Inter. He isn’t dictating games, elevating those around him, or the type of midfielder who changes the entire dynamic of a side.

He arrives late in the box, he scores the odd goal, he carries the ball with energy, but Newcastle already have that profile, and they have it in abundance.

Joe Willock is finally fit again and offers the same vertical thrust. Jacob Ramsey brings ball-carrying and end-product between the lines.

Lewis Miley is still only a teenager, but has shown maturity, composure, and a ceiling far higher than Frattesi’s.

That’s three bench options capable of covering the No. 8 role for the rest of the season.

This isn’t a squad desperate for another runner. It’s a squad that needs a genuine level-raiser.

The Magpies need someone who can control matches, set the tempo, progress the ball under pressure, and give Eddie Howe a different gear in big games.

That type of midfielder doesn’t arrive in January, and Frattesi absolutely isn’t that calibre. Newcastle need to think bigger.

Let January be about stability, fitness, and building rhythm with what they already have.

Then, in the summer, go and sign the midfielder who actually raises the ceiling of this project, not a stopgap who doesn’t meaningfully move the needle.
