Manchester City are closely monitoring Newcastle and Italy international Sandro Tonali ahead of the summer transfer window, with a view to shore up their midfield when club captain Bernardo Silva‘s contract expires in June.

The Blues are also in the market for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and as they navigate Rodri’s contract situation, Tonali could be heading to the Etihad Stadium alongside his former Newcastle teammate ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Manchester City willing to offer four players in package deal for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali

Are Newcastle open to selling Tonali this summer?

Tonali is under contract in the north-east till the summer of 2029, with the option to extend the deal by another 12 months.

However, Newcastle United have endured a poor season on the domestic and European fronts and can expected to lose some of their biggest stars in the summer transfer window.

Tonali’s agent has flirted with the idea of the Italian moving to an elite European club in the summer to challenge for major trophies as he enters the prime of his career.

However, it has recently been revealed that Newcastle United and Tonali do not have a gentlemen’s agreement that would facilitate a departure at the end of this season, contrary to speculation.

Report: Howe uncertainty could trigger Tonali sale

As reported by Mail Sport’s Craig Hope, financial restraints of a poor season for St. James’ Park officials and doubts over Howe’s future could force the Magpies to sanction the sales of one of Tonali or Anthony Gordon.

The economic repercussions of missing out on Europe and a potential bottom half Premier League finish will likely force Newcastle United to offload some high-profile names in the summer window if they are to recruit more players.

Manchester City are keeping tabs of Tonali’s situation and are believed to be leading the race to sign Anderson, who is expected to make a decision on his club future after the FIFA World Cup.

City are also likely to see Mateo Kovacic and Kalvin Phillips leave this summer as director of football Hugo Viana progresses his remake of Pep Guardiola’s squad, having made nine new signings since replacing Txiki Begiristain in 2025.
