Newcastle United have reportedly identified Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi as the ideal profile to replace Sandro Tonali.
The Magpies spent circa €59 million to sign the Italian midfielder from Milan in the summer of 2023. While his first campaign was wrecked by a lengthy ban due to illegal betting, the 24-year-old is now proving his worth, playing an instrumental role in the club’s push for a Champions League spot.
Tonali’s solid displays this season have reignited Juventus’ old interest in the Brescia youth product. Several sources in Italian football insist that the Bianconeri have now pinpointed Tonali as their dream target to bolster the middle of the park. While Newcastle are keen to keep the Italy international, Juve will try to tempt them by adding counterparts to a swap deal.
According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Premier League club would then turn to Guendouzi to fill the void left by Tonali. As the source explains, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is an old admirer of the former Arsenal and Marseille midfielder. Due to his technical and tactical characteristics, the Frenchman would be one of the first names on the English club’s shortlist.

Nevertheless, Lazio would certainly have their say in this domino effect, as club president Claudio Lotito wouldn’t sanction the departure of one of his most important players unless he receives a genuinely lucrative offer.
The 26-year-old has been plying his trade at the Stadio Olimpico since the summer of 2023. His current contract runs until June 2028. This season, he has contributed with one goal and five assists in all competitions, while establishing himself as one of the most well-rounded midfielders in Serie A.
