Neymar has moved closer to closing his Brazil chapter, indicating after Santos’ latest match that he no longer plans to return to the national team.

His farewell had felt imminent since the World Cup round of 16, when a stoppage-time penalty against Norway proved incidental to Brazil’s exit. In tears, he said then that his adventure with the national side was coming to an end.

Overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, following Santos’ Copa Sudamericana play-off win, 4-2 against Venezuela’s Universidad Central, he dampened any remaining hopes among supporters. This came despite Lucas Moura having expressed a wish to see him back for the 2030 World Cup.

Neymar said he thinks his time with the national team is over. He added that he is happy with the history he has made and, having always fought for the yellow shirt, he believes he no longer has the desire.

He stopped short of explicitly announcing international retirement, yet the remarks point firmly in that direction. Brazil’s record scorer on 80 goals, he played only 37 minutes at the last World Cup.
