Nigel Farage says a Sunderland director has invited him to a home game at the Stadium of Light, and he wants more clubs to discuss the Independent Football Regulator with him.
"I am hoping to go to a home game there at some point before the end of the season," Farage said. He told ITV News. "I have been talking to one of the directors and they would very much like to see me there for a home game. If I can make it, I will."
Farage was in the city on Thursday to launch Reform UK's local election campaign at the Sunderland Live Arena. Sunderland have been contacted for comment.
Earlier this week, Ipswich Town were criticised after his visit to the Sky Bet Championship club's Portman Road on Monday ahead of a rally at Trinity Park. He posed for photos in the dressing room and media areas and pitchside, and in a video he thanked the club for the "lovely welcome".
He said clubs should be open to talks about the proposed regulator, which would be independent of both the government and football authorities. He argued a state-appointed regulator is the last thing English football needs, given the Premier League's success.
He said he raised the issue at Ipswich, plans to do so at Sunderland soon, and wants to speak to all clubs. He added that this is not about support, rather a club being open to leaders of national political parties.
