Sunderland’s World Cup contingent enjoyed a standout night. According to Sunderland Echo, it was highlighted by Nilson Angulo scoring for Ecuador in a 2-1 win over Germany that unexpectedly sealed a knockout berth.
The winger struck from range and was named player of the match. England are among Ecuador’s potential next opponents. His form is a major positive for Sunderland, who hope he can make a big impact next season after time to adjust and recover from injury since his January move from Anderlecht.
Brian Brobbey continued his superb run for the Netherlands, scoring again and taking man of the match in a 3-1 win over Tunisia. The Dutch topped group F and will face Morocco in the round of 32 next week.
Omar Alderete helped Paraguay draw 0-0 with Australia to secure a final 32 spot as one of the best third-place qualifiers. He suffered a late injury scare and will be assessed.
Simon Adingra was an unused substitute as Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0 to progress. Sunderland now have four different scorers at the World Cup, a mark bettered only by Ligue 1 champions PSG, and six goals overall, behind only Real Madrid’s nine.
Only Wilson Isidor exits after the group stage. Many players will likely miss the start of the pre-season programme, though FIFA pays the club around $5,000 per player per day at the tournament.
Habib Diarra’s Senegal need to beat Iraq on Friday night to keep hopes of a best third-place berth alive. Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku also require a positive result against Uzbekistan on Sunday morning for DR Congo to advance.
