Coventry City and Sheffield United look set for disappointment in their pursuit of Hull City defender Charlie Hughes, who the Tigers will not sell.

Hull paid a handsome £3.5m to Wigan Athletic last summer for Hughes and his stock has only risen since that move.

The 21-year-old defender impressed in his 27 Championship starts last season and is attracting transfer interest in the ongoing transfer window.

Coventry City, who are looking to achieve promotion after they got very close in the last campaign, are looking at Hughes.

Sheffield United lost in the playoff final against Sunderland and have just lost Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord.

The Blades are also keen on Hughes, but along with Coventry City they are facing disappointment.

Hull have no intention of letting him go and believe he can be a £20m plus asset, according to journalist Baz Cooper.

With ‘no intention of selling’ the stance at the MKM Stadium, Hull are planning with Hughes in the side.

Jacob Greaves commanded a massive £15m last summer as he moved to Ipswich Town and Hull believe that Hughes will trigger a bigger fee than Greaves when he does go.

The central defender spent a few years in Manchester City and Liverpool’s youth systems before he moved to Wigan Athletic.

Hughes’ current contract runs until the summer of 2028, with an option for another year, and Hull are not making it easy for his suitors.

The Tigers are also still under a transfer embargo, which would complicate getting in a replacement.

It remains to be seen if the Blades or the Sky Blues will test Hull’s resolve with offers before the transfer window shuts down.
