Hugo Ékitiké (23) was sent off for Liverpool during their 2-1 victory against Southampton in the Carabao Cup in bizarre circumstances. The France international forward scored the winning goal for the Premier League champions and removed his shirt during celebrations, for which he received a yellow card.
However, the former Eintracht Frankfurt striker had already received a yellow card for dissent after he threw the ball away following the referee’s decision to give a foul against him. Ékitiké’s dismissal didn’t have a detrimental effect on the outcome, but made the last ten minutes harder for his teammates as they were forced to see the result out with ten men. Liverpool manager Arne Slot called the situation “needless and stupid” after the match.
In the couple of days following the match, reports had circulated that the 23-year-old had received a deduction of two weeks’ wages as punishment for the dismissal. Nevertheless, Foot Mercato reports that the Frenchman has not received any form of financial or sporting punishment for his red card.
