Manchester City’s legendary former manager Roberto Mancini has received contact from Nottingham Forest over their vacant coaching position.

Forest wasted no time in beginning their search for a new head coach following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou, less than 40 days after his initial appointment at the City Ground – the shortest permanent managerial spell in Premier League history.

His exit followed a crushing 0-3 home defeat to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon in a result that left Nottingham Forest languishing near the foot of the table and prompting swift action from owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Marinakis left his seat midway through the second half, and it was a senior club official who later informed Postecoglou of his dismissal, with the former Tottenham and Celtic boss saying his goodbyes to players with an apology, acknowledging a failure to meet expectations.

Postecoglou’s reign produced no victories in eight matches across all competitions, with two draws and six defeats leaving Forest perilously close to the relegation zone, and attention has quickly shifted toward finding a successor capable of stabilising the team and reigniting belief.

Now, according to the information of The Athletic, Nottingham Forest have been in contact with former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini as an option to become their new head coach.

Mancini’s potential return to the Premier League would be a remarkable development, with the Italian tactician having been out of work since leaving his role with Saudi Arabia in 2024 but remaining a respected and high-profile name in European football.

His time at Manchester City between 2009 and 2013 is fondly remembered, having led the club to their first Premier League title in 44 years and laying the groundwork for the dynasty that followed under Manuel Pellegrini, but most notably under Pep Guardiola.

Nottingham Forest’s interest suggests a desire to inject experience and authority into a side that has struggled for cohesion, while his track record of discipline, tactical structure, and success in both domestic and international football would make him an appealing choice.

While talks remain exploratory at this stage, Roberto Mancini’s reported openness to a return to English football could accelerate discussions, despite ongoing ties to the likes of Sean Dyche and Marco Silva.
