Real Madrid secured their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after eliminating neighbours and arch-rivals Atletico via penalty shootouts on Wednesday night.
However, the triumph came at a cost as the Merengues lost key defender Ferland Mendy to a hamstring injury, the club have officially confirmed.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Ferland Mendy by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury in the biceps femoris of his left leg. Pending evolution,” the statement from the club read.
Building on the statement from the club, journalist Arancha Rodriguez reports that the French international is likely to be out of action for a period of three to four weeks.

This comes as a blow for Real Madrid heading into the business end of the season considering that Mendy is a key player for manager Carlo Ancelotti.
However, with the international break coming up soon, Real Madrid will not be in action for a couple of weeks after Saturday’s La Liga clash against Villarreal.
It would mean that Menady might not miss many matches for the reigning champions of Spain and Europe.
But, he is expected to be unavailable for the league game against Leganes on March 29, the Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg tie vs Real Sociedad on April 1, and the La Liga clash against Valencia (April 6).
Mendy’s availability for the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals against Arsenal on April 8 will potentially be touch-and-go.
