Precisely ten days after posting his famous farewell video, German footballing legend Thomas Müller has confirmed his move to the Vancouver Whitecaps. Müller posted another video on his private social media channels Wednesday evening. The 35-year-old – after representing the Bundesliga record champions Bayern Munich for the entirety of his career – is headed to the Canadian franchise.

Whitecaps, let’s make history,” Müler noted in his video message. “I’m excited to come to Vancouver and help the team win the [MLS] title. I heard a lot of good things about the city. But first and foremost, I came here to win.”

Müller was also personally welcomed by the MLS club’s German footballing administrator Axel Schuster. The 53-year-old moved to Vancouver in November of 2019 to serve as sporting director of the club. He was promoted to managing director seven months later.

Schuster served as protege of famous German footballing functionary Christian Heidel both at Mainz and Schalke before heading across the pond. As Müller pondered which MLS club to join, it appears one of his countrymen convinced him to move to British Colombia.

Thomas is a world-class player,” Schuster noted in his statement before referencing Müller’s famous nickname, the “Raumdeuter” [“space interpreter“], “He’s known for his outstanding ability to create chances via for his unmatched spatial awareness and tireless movement off the ball. Thomas is a born leader whose passion for football is contagious.
