OGC Nice supporters delivered a heartfelt tribute to captain Dante, 42, on his retirement after a decade at the club. According to Nice-Matin, around 1,000 fans gathered at Villa Masséna in Nice on Thursday evening.
He had not prepared a speech and spoke off the cuff, saying he would return one day and that the city feels like home. He will return to Bayern Munich to coach the U23s.
Long-time fan Frédéric described him as loyal and combative, a player who always gave everything for the team. In his view, Dante belongs in the club’s all-time XI in defence.
Raphaël and Amaury, who have followed Nice for eight and 11 years, praised his human values and influence on team-mates. They felt the club would not be the same without him and said the event was well organised.
Jean-Pierre, a supporter since 1960, called him unforgettable and lauded both his footballing quality and sense of honour. He highlighted Dante’s recovery from a serious knee injury at 38 as evidence of his exceptional character. He also placed the Brazilian in Nice’s all-time XI.
