OGC Nice crashed out of the UEFA Europa League during the League Phase last season without registering a single victory. So far this season, they are on course to repeat the feat, having lost 2-1 to Celta Vigo on Thursday night.
Franck Haise’s side went behind almost immediately, thanks to Iago Aspas’ opener. However, they quickly levelled the scores as Mohamed-Ali Cho swept home. Then, in the 38th minute, came what Melvin Bard called “the turning point” as Jonathan Clauss was shown a second yellow card and subsequently a red.
Whilst the Spanish side, yet to win in La Liga so far this season, struggled to break Nice down, they did get the goal, courtesy of Kojo Peprah Oppong, who put the ball past his own goalkeeper, Yehvann Diouf.
It means that Nice are one of four teams in the Europa League who are yet to register a win. It also continues a run that now goes back over a year, with Le Gym failing to win any of their last 15 European encounters. Their chances of progressing from the League Phase this season already look slim, just three games in.
