River have appointed Spanish executive Pablo Longoria as sporting director, placing him in charge of the football project with direct reporting to Stéfano Di Carlo and Enzo Francescoli. The club announced that the move is aimed at reorganising and strengthening the department.
Longoria, 39, arrives after leaving the presidency of Olympique de Marseille, ending speculation and confirming his move to Núñez with comprehensive control over sporting planning.
Despite his age, he carries extensive experience. He began as a scout at Newcastle United in 2007, then became head of scouting at Recreativo de Huelva after their promotion to LaLiga, before roles with Atalanta, Sassuolo, Juventus and Valencia CF.
He joined Marseille in 2020 as sporting director, then stepped up to the presidency in 2021.
His remit is to raise standards across areas, taking charge of end to end sporting management to deepen the project and reinforce the club’s institutional image.
He will also lead scouting to position River as a regional reference, drive the growth of youth football and help consolidate an environment that sustains and protects academy graduates.
