Palmeiras left-back Jefté has undergone surgery on a meniscus injury to his right knee and faces a lengthy spell out.
He twisted the joint during the match against Chapecoense at Nubank Parque, and first complained of pain on Monday, the day after the game, while at hospital for the birth of his child. According to Nosso Palestra, the chosen procedure was a meniscal repair, a method that prioritises long-term career longevity.
Subsequent tests confirmed a meniscus injury, and the operation was performed on Sunday. He has now started rehabilitation.
Because of the repair approach, the expectation is that he will only be available late in the season, with recovery for this kind of injury usually four to six months.
Palmeiras are on a World Cup break, with the squad set to resume work at the Football Academy on 21 June. The tournament begins on 11 June.
At left-back, the club have Joaquín Piquerez, currently at the World Cup, and academy graduate Arthur, who has taken the starting role, while Jefté faces a long lay-off.
