Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League, claiming a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Friday evening.
United started the game on the front foot, with Patrick Dorgu creating a good opening for Benjamin Sesko, but the Slovenian fluffed the chance.
Man United broke the deadlock after 23 minutes, as Dorgu fired a volley into the bottom left corner, netting his first Premier League goal.
The Denmark international was presented with another chance to double United’s lead, but this time Aaron Ramsdale denied him.
Newcastle bossed possession late in the half, yet Senne Lammens in the United goal remained untested until the interval.
United made a substitution at the break, with Mason Mount replaced by teenager Jack Fletcher.
The Magpies started the second half on the front foot and nearly scored when the ball dropped to Fabian Schar at the back post, but the defender’s shot was deflected behind for a corner.
At the the other end, Sesko hit the frame of the goal, while Lewis Hall did the same for the visitors.
Anthony Gordon could not believe that he had not restored parity when he managed to squeeze a shot from an acute angle, only for it to drag wide, despite evading the outstretched Lammens.
Diogo Dalot squandered a big chance to add to the hosts’ tally, running behind the visitors’ defence to set himself up one-on-one with Ramsdale, but blazed the ball over.
Gordon saw another opportunity go begging, smashing his shot wide, following a brilliant team move.
Newcastle cranked up the pressure for the equaliser, but United held on to secure the victory.
The result sees United climb to fifth in the standings, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
