‘Plans to return to Old Trafford’: Journo throws spanner in works of on-loan Red’s United future

Andre Onana is said to be ‘feeling the love’ since swapping Manchester United for Trabzonspor last month.

Ruben Amorim’s preference for Altay Bayindir in the Premier League, coupled with Senne Lammens’ deadline-day arrival from Royal Antwerp, resulted in Onana departing Old Trafford in September to spend the season in Turkey.

The shot-stopper joined Trabzonspor on loan after accepting he wouldn’t be playing almost any football at all if he stayed put at United.

Onana only featured once in the opening weeks of the campaign, being called upon to start in United’s second-round Carabao Cup clash away to League Two outfit Grimsby Town.

He proceeded to oversee a calamitous display, conceding two first-half goals and 12 penalties in the shootout.

The match was subsequently deemed something of a final straw for Amorim, who then implored INEOS to enter the market in the final week of the window for a new ‘keeper. After agreeing personal terms with Emiliano Martinez, the key decision-makers opted for a younger alternative in the form of 23-year-old Lammens.

When negotiating Onana’s exit, United did not include a buy option or obligation in his terms. As such, Samuel Luckhurst claims the Cameroonian ‘still plans to return to Old Trafford’ when his temporary spell comes to an end next June – unless a permanent deal is agreed before then.

Reports have suggested Trabzonspor will look to sign Onana, who is tied to United until 2028, on a long-term contract. It remains to be seen what kind of fee the Reds would demand for a player they forked out £47.2 million for.
