Across a century, numerous players have worn both Atlético de Madrid and Athletic Club shirts. As reported by as.com, the pipeline between Bilbao and Madrid is long-standing.
Ramón de la Fuente Leal won three leagues and four Cups with Athletic from 1926 to 1934, joined Atlético in 1934-35, then suffered a leg break in 1935 against Sevilla’s Eizaguirre. José Ramon Ochandiano switched in 1929-30 after six Athletic seasons.
Cayetano Gana Vidaurrazaga kept goal for Athletic from 1949 to 1952, then for Atlético for three years. Beitia featured for Athletic from 1957 to 1960 and for Atlético in 1963-64. Irureta made 277 Atlético appearances from 1967 to 1975, then five seasons at Athletic.
Andoni Goikoetxea debuted for Athletic in 1975, scoring 44 in 369, before joining Atlético in 1987. Uralde scored eight for Atlético in 1986-87, then 40 for Athletic. Julio Salinas left Athletic in 1986 and struck 31 in two Atlético seasons. Rubén Bilbao later had limited Atlético minutes.
Ferreira played for Athletic and later for Atlético from 1993 to 1995 with a loan to Sevilla. Pizo Gómez debuted for Athletic in 1985 and made 88 Atlético appearances across two spells. Santi Ezquerro joined Athletic in May 1998, playing 260 games across seven seasons.
Txomin Nagore joined Atlético in 2001-02 for 3 million euros after emerging with Athletic’s reserves. Daniel Aranzubia signed for Atlético in 2013-14 as back-up, and Iago Herrerín returned to Athletic’s first team in 2013 after Atlético Madrid B. Raúl García played for Atlético from 2007 to 2015, then for Athletic until 2024.
