Sunderland were denied a penalty in the opening exchanges against Bournemouth.

The Premier League said in a statement that the referee’s decision, checked and confirmed by VAR, was considered normal contact following Alex Jiménez’s challenge on Enzo Le Fée.

The incident came as Le Fée broke into the box and appeared to be pushed without the ball being played.

On the pitch, referee Jarred Gillett waved away Sunderland’s appeals.

The explanation was published on the Premier League match centre after the incident.
