PSG 5-2 Chelsea: standout numbers from a landmark Champions League night

PSG’s emphatic 5-2 win over Chelsea in the Champions League last-16 first leg marked a landmark for French football. L'Équipe highlights the key numbers.
PSG are the first French side to hit five past English opposition in a Champions League knockout tie. Chelsea conceded five in the competition for only the second time, after 18 April 2000 against Barcelona, 1-5. Chelsea are also the English club PSG have beaten most in the competition, four times.
PSG have scored at least five in three Champions League games this season, a club best. They have won seven of their last 10 against English clubs, with one draw and two defeats. That mirrors their first 25 such games, seven wins, seven draws and 11 defeats.
When winning the first leg in Champions League knockouts, PSG have progressed in seven of the last eight, the exception Real Madrid in 2021-22, 1-0 then 1-3. They are also the first side since Kaiserslautern in 1998-1999 to reach nine goals by substitutes.
French players have scored four against PSG in this season’s competition, via a Randal Kolo Muani double, Maghnes Akliouche and Malo Gusto, after none last term.
13 of Ousmane Dembélé’s 20 Champions League goal involvements have come in knockouts, seven goals and six assists, with only Kylian Mbappé registering more for PSG in such games, 17. From the bench, Khvitcha Kvaratskhelia produced two goals and an assist to reach 15 in 19 Champions League games, compared with 14 in 35 Ligue 1.
