Manchester City could secure one of the world’s very best goalkeepers for a staggering cut-price deal this summer, it has now been revealed.
The Premier League giants are exploring options in goal amid ongoing uncertainty around Ederson’s future at the Etihad Stadium, with the Brazilian having been a cornerstone of City’s success since 2017.
The Brazilian continues to attract heavy interest from Galatasaray after turning down the opportunity of Saudi Arabia last summer, leaving the door open for Pep Guardiola to potentially oversee a major change in a crucial position.
Manchester City have already been linked with several high-profile names this summer, but have seemingly focussed in on Gianluigi Donnarumma – a player with a firm reputation as one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers.
Despite the Italian’s age – still just 26 – and his standing as Italy’s number one, PSG appear desperate to sanction his departure having signed Lucas Chevalier as a replacement, opening the door for interested clubs to test the waters.
For Manchester City, whose recruitment strategy has often focused on value as much as quality, the situation could represent a rare opportunity in the market, despite already signing James Trafford from Burnley earlier this summer.
According to the information of journalist Fabrice Hawkins, PSG are ready to accept around €30 million for Gianluigi Donnarumma as they want him to leave the club this summer.
It is further explained that the goalkeeper himself wants to join Manchester City, with an agreement in principle already in place between the two sides, while officials at the Etihad Stadium remain in talks with Galatasaray over a deal for Ederson.
City hope to find a solution that will see their long-standing number one move to the Turkish champions, with that transfer labelled as ‘the condition’ in order to make a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma happen.
Should Ederson complete his move away, the arrival of Donnarumma would represent a major statement by Manchester City, not only replacing a club legend but doing so with a goalkeeper still approaching his peak years.
That said, Pep Guardiola and City’s hierarchy will be conscious of squad balance and harmony. A deal for Donnarumma would immediately raise questions about James Trafford’s pathway, with the Englishman keen on significant playing time as a No.1 this season.
Much will hinge on how quickly Ederson’s situation develops in the coming days. If Galatasaray can present a package that satisfies City’s valuation, Donnarumma could emerge as one of the most eye-catching signings of the summer.
For now, the Premier League giants – led by sporting director Hugo Viana – remain in wait-and-see mode, but the potential of landing Italy’s number one for €30 million is a scenario they will not ignore.
