After speculation that Rangers were close to potentially appointing either Neil McCann or Steven Davis, or indeed both as background staff, it has all gone a bit silent on that front. Danny Röhl is on record as confirming he would like a former Rangers player to be on his staff to give him some context of the league and some Rangers identity among his group. No specific appointment date was necessarily confirmed although speculation persisted that this might happen during the international break, but as yet we see no progress in this area.
Davis and Wallace discussions
Ibrox Noise does understand that Steven Davis and Lee Wallace were spoken to regarding this role, but nothing has materialised yet. Davis himself denied any discussions at all in a recent appearance on Premier Sports where he confirmed that nobody had approached him at all, which means the whole thing is a bit in limbo.
Röhl would benefit from Rangers experience
It is abundantly clear that Danny Röhl would seriously benefit from a major stormtrooper of Rangers origin at his side. Philippe Clement did the same thing and appointed Alex Rae as his assistant, not necessarily the most obvious choice but that is who he went with. But Steven Davis and indeed Wallace or Neil McCann are all well-respected ex-Rangers players who have wisdom to add to any manager who is not a native of the SPL.
Rangers identity in the backroom team
It has been a long-lasting trope among Rangers fans, having the Rangers identity in the backroom staff. Many fans would quote Barry Ferguson on it or any other number of major ex-Rangers players who could add something to the backroom team. But it just hasn’t happened yet. We wonder when it will, or indeed if it will, but fans would be very keen to see such an individual being appointed sometime soon.
