Rangers have sacked head coach Russell Martin just 123 days into his tenure, following a 1–1 draw at Falkirk that left the Ibrox side languishing in eighth place in the Scottish Premiership. As reported by Sky Sports, the result matched Rangers’ worst-ever start to a league campaign, with only one win in seven games and mounting frustration among supporters.
The atmosphere turned toxic at full-time, with fans blocking the team bus and Martin requiring a police escort from the ground. The club confirmed his departure on Monday morning, alongside assistant Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson. In an official statement, Rangers acknowledged Martin’s work ethic but admitted “results have not met expectations.”
Martin’s brief reign proved a litany of disappointments. Rangers’ Champions League hopes were shattered in humiliating fashion by Club Brugge, losing 9–1 on aggregate, while early Europa League defeats to Genk and Sturm Graz deepened the growing anger of the fans.
Despite modest progress in the League Cup, where a semi-final against Celtic awaits, Martin departs as the shortest-serving and statistically worst-performing permanent manager in the club’s history.
With Rangers now 11 points behind leaders Hearts and nine adrift of Celtic, Ibrox faces yet another period of upheaval, its fourth managerial reset in less than three years.
